  • [Spring 2016] Kuromukuro Discussion Thread

    Widgets Magazine
Now that the episodes are out on Netflix, I'll start a discussion thread on this show halfway in. I plan to do the same when Adventures of Sinbad comes out next week.

    クロムクロ

A show about a samurai from the past awakening in the present to pilot a mecha and defeat enemies of Japanese myth from outer space.

    Airs: Thursday, April 7

    Studio: P.A. Works

    ANN Entry
    My Anime List
    Official Site
    Netflix

During the construction of the Kurobe Dam, an ancient artifact was discovered, and so the United Nations Kurobe Research Institute was established. Intellectuals from all over the world gathered to study the object, and the children of those researchers attend Mt. Tate International Senior High School, including the institute head's daughter, Yukina Shirahane. In the summer of 2016, a lone samurai once again awakens.

    Episode 1

    Get out of the cube.

Yukina is so hopeless when it comes to her career prospects as she's flunking in school. But the outlook begins to change when she comes into her mother's research facility and stumble across a man who is not of this timeline seeing that he sees Yukina as the princess. He runs around naked beating up those demons that fall from the sky before being tranquilized. This show is off to a decent start there, but I felt that things just happened too quickly there. Yukina might have been a lost cause there, but it looks like having met Kennosuke is set to change her life in ways she never thought possible.

So with this show having been released on Netflix yesterday that I decided now would be the time to sign up to watch this and other Netflix exclusives before cancelling at the end. I plan to at least get through the first half of this show, though it sucks that even with the delay, Netflix still opted to pass on dubbing this.

Out of the cell and into the shell.

Hiromi should have been more careful when she approached Kennosuke as he threatened to choke her had he not been released. Anyway, Kennosuke and Yukina are starting to build up some chemistry there seeing that Kennosuke did mistake her for the princes after all. There's still a lot that doesn't make sense here as Kennosuke is from the past and fought in the Kuromukuro, which is too technologically advanced from the time he came from.

        There's nobody home.

That was amusing to see Kennosuke returning to the castle that the princess once called home, but is now a tourist attraction today, as well as Koharu's reaction when she sees a real life samurai as she's quite a big fan of samurai shows. Anyway, Kennosuke now realizes that he can't just use his sword to slay everything and it's about time that he realizes that he's in the future, and that the world is much different than when he lived. Now that Kennosuke is living with Yukina that things are about to change. It will be interesting to see how he adjusts to daily life. So far, this show has been nice visually as to be expected out of P.A. and the same production team that did Nagi no Asukara, but the story seems to be lacking.

So with that, I'm back to watching some more of this as I got through the first three episodes yesterday.

          Episode 4

          Still living in the past.

Kennosuke begins his life as a civilian in modern Japan, and it's pretty amusing to see him thinking about how things were back in the feudal era in comparison from wearing a loincloth instead of underwear to thinking that actual people are inside the TV box, as well as seeing the shopping mall as a castle. But the mood was ruined when those two guys were interviewing Yukina in a harassing manner, while Kennosuke was using that sign like a weapon. It turns out that he is the last surviving member of a clan that time forgot, and that adds a lot of intrigue to the mystery about what his deal was in the past.

He's got a lot to learn.

Kennosuke goes to school as part of Yukina's assignment to keep watch over him, and predictably he has no clue how to behave himself. It gets especially bad during a kendo practice match here he uses his wooden sword as if he were trying to kill somebody. It's a great thing that Unami-sensei knows what to say in order to get Kennosuke to stop acting so savage. The GAUS unit crew is an interesting bunch there, especially the one nicknamed Sebastian. Now there's a threat that has to be dealt with seeing that Yukina, Kennosuke, and the GAUS unit have to be deployed into action.

              Episode 6

              There's a human inside.

The Kuromukuro and two GAUS mechas fight the three ogres at the airport, and the place gets totally destroyed seeing that it was necessary in order to win. That's some great action there, especially the part where Kennosuke loses his sword, but manages to swipe one from the enemy to deliver the deciding blow. But then comes a huge twist there at the end where those ogres are actually being piloted by people belonging to an organization called Efi Dorg, and everybody knows about it because Akagi and Kayahara just had to get close to the action to broadcast the battle. That was quite a huge game-changer seeing that the enemy is not what they thought it was.

                Episode 7

                She wants out.

Poor Yukina having to witness what appears to be a human blowing himself up in that ogre mecha that Kennosuke just defeated, and seeing how emotionally unstable she was at the beginning, things really start to take its toll on her after that tirade with her mother. And in the meantime, the aliens are up to something given the history of the Kuromukuro that the princess stole it. Lots of intrigue going on here and it will be interesting to see just what Efi Dorg is all about. But in the meantime, Yukina has gone missing.

                  Episode 8

                  That castle is long gone.

Yukina is first at Ogino's apartment, and then she heads out to the place where the castle once was with Kennosuke riding a horse to find her. As much as Hiromi wanted to keep Yukina out of this, it appears that Yukina has to fight or else humanity is as good as gone. And then there is somebody appearing out of nowhere to defeat those geoframes just when it looked like Yukina is a goner. Seeing that Yukina said it's father that it could be him seeing that he vanished somewhere rather than dying. Next time, Fusunani attacks due to the fact that as expected, the UN isn't giving up the Kuromukuro back to them to fuel whatever kind of treachery they have planned.

                    Episode 9

                    Let's ride together.

We still don't know whose hand that was, but nevertheless Yukina has found her resolve after all that as she agrees to be Kennosuke's navigator in the Kuromukuro. I just can't stand Akagi and Kayahara there only caring about getting views for their live broadcasts of the action and not giving a care in the world about the dangers involved. Anyway, that fight is great, and those two are finally wearing their pilot suits while fighting and they look great in them. Unlike with with the last alien, Fusunani agrees to become a prisoner seeing that the UN needs to get the truth about everything that has been happening. It should be interesting to see what Fusunani has to say about all this.

                      Episode 10

                      Unarmed, but dangerous.

Lots of things get revealed here with Fusunani's sword being similar to Kennosuke's, as well as the events that happened 450 years ago. As expected, Efi Dorg is out to take over the Earth and in order to make this savage place prosperous. How Kennosuke managed to acquire something that's well ahead of its time was the result of an alien scout party arriving, and apparently Kennosuke was one of them before he turned his back and betrayed everybody. Yukina is certainly connected to the princess seeing that the princess used to pilot the Kuromukuro. But now, Fusunani manages to slip out of his handcuffs and activate the Long Arm remotely, all while he bumps into Yukina to set the stage for a big fight. There's still a lot that isn't known, and everything would have been easier if those UN people let Kennosuke speak with Fusunani right away rather than going through this process.

                        Episode 11

                        Everything's a mystery.

Kennosuke pretty much had no choice but to kill Fusunani and now that he's dead, the Long Arm geoframe is down, but that means a critical lead clue to everything is gone. That, and the place where Yukina found her father's notebook is just a crater. And the answer of what the pivot is revealed as those stones at the excavation site are what he was talking about. Just when it looked like Kennosuke was finally going to get some answers, an apparent cover-up operation is in the works. At least Kennosuke's determination to protect Yukina has taken the next level, but that was a huge setback.

                          Whip'er into shape.

After everything that happened, Ken and Yukina need to get stronger, so they spend their summer vacation in boot camp with Akagi and the GAUS pilots. While everybody else had no problem with the drills, unsurprisingly Yukina and Akagi both struggle, and at least Akagi's camp is done after suffering a nasty injury. But Yukina manages to survive camp and is much stronger than before, and while it is a work in progress, at least the GAUS units can walk on water a bit. And then the shock collar comes off. That was a great way to develop Yukina seeing that the world is depending on her. At least that ought to shut up Akagi for awhile seeing that he such an annoying guy.

                            That ain't cosplay.

The school took some pretty bad damage there, but despite that the culture festival is still going forward as if nothing happened. Having a forum about the Efidolgs is a pretty good idea seeing that they are the biggest threat at the moment. The festival part wasn't very interesting, but the stuff at the end really got me on edge there as not only did Muetta stabbed Ken, but she shows herself appearing to be the princess that Ken thought was dead. That is quite the cliffhanger there to end the first half.

So with that, I have reached the end of the all the episodes Netflix will have available for awhile. So far, this show has had its fair share of ups and downs, but it looks like things are starting to really pick up now that the UN knows something about those Efidolg guys.

                              That's the princess?

In the end, Kennosuke was saved thanks to some masked man stopping Muetta before she could deliver the fatal blow, but nevertheless Kurobe is in a state of emergency. It's a good thing that those Efidolgs don't have any team chemistry as Muetta and Mirasa are not working as a team, and they end up hurting each other through friendly fire and that forces them to retreat. As much as Kennosuke wanted to follow them, he's not in any shape to do it. Things sure did get chaotic in a hurry, and as if being attacked wasn't enough, the fact that it might be the princess added a whole lot of turmoil.

Having just signed up for Netflix again with these episodes available that I'm continuing to watch this to the end. I wanted to wait a little before starting again now that the World Series is over and I have my fall watchlist figured out.
