12 years ago, in the country of Rimguard, a big incident left an unsolved mystery that has begun to fade from people's memories. Time passes, and sisters Yui and Rena are living peacefully in the Enastria Empire. However, one day, a large mecha attacks Enastria. This day marks the turning point when the two girls get caught in the vortex of fate.

    Episode 1

    Sisters in mecha arms.

And so it begins with a peaceful empire suddenly facing a big threat. As it turns out, Rena is no ordinary girl as there's a mecha inside her called a Regalia, and some guy from her past is coming for her head and willing to trash the place to get her. So Rena transforms into a Regalia, but alone she just doesn't stand a chance. Bring in her sister Yui, who is the empress of the empire, and they become much stronger. The story so far has a lot of intrigue seeing that there's this mystery of who Rena is, as well as what exactly is going on. The mecha action was alright, but the way it flowed was just generic. Anyway, the characters look like they will make this show worthwhile, but I'll see about that.

Another one to forget about instantly. It's amazing how many of these we get.

        Sizing up the enemy.

Yui was acting pretty stubborn here publicly giving out her sizes just like that, as well as putting her country at risk to maintain her sisterhood with Rena. But of course, there's no changing the fact that they are indeed sisters, and they will fight to see that through to the end. Then comes Jonny and Johann challenging Rena to a battle where those jokers overwhelm her with their circus tricks, and now Yui and Rena are in a really bad position. At least the mecha action is decent here, but the story failed to take a step forward from last week essentially just reiterating the two keypoints about the connection to 12 years past and those two protecting their sisterhood. I'll give it another episode or two just to see how that battle ends, but I certainly got less invested in this show.

I like that not only do we have a female mecha protagonist here, but one who has the heavy responsibility of a leader. Yui has to try and make sure her citizens aren't caught in the collateral crossfire. Now she has the full confidence of her inner circle, but as far as the people goes... the press conferences may not go as smoothly as this continues to go on, particularly if tragedy strikes. Rena may have understood that too (besides not wanting to get Yui herself involved) when she ran off in the first episode.

I also rather like what Retsu represents. Yui has someone around to talk casually with. Oh, and she says she's joking, but did seem like it felt that way before she pulled the "joke". Hopefully that continues to be a nice relationship.

            Episode 3

            Here's some food for thought.

Rena manages to break that box by punching it with overwhelming force, and she turns into something that's not exactly herself. After that, it's back to home where there's a festival, and Yui helps out Retsu with the food stall alongside with another pair of Regalia sisters in Sara and Tia. There definitely is something strange about Rena seeing that she's like a completely different person there when she flames up. Anyway, the interactions are cute, but the way the cliffhanger from last week gets resolved is pretty underwhelming. Not to mention, the transition from the serious stuff at the beginning to the lighthearted stuff at the end is pretty sloppy.

So with that, I'll give it one more episode. As much as I want to watch this show even with the expectations I have for it, this season is getting pretty crowded.

              Episode 4

              Everybody has her back.

Abel arrives demanding that Yui hand over Rena, and Rena's response is to transform into a Regalia and battle Abel. As the ensuing battle results in a bridge being partially destroyed that Yui stops Rena, while Abel withdraws unwilling to battle in such a mood, and that leads to Yui and Rena doing some soul searching. But in the end, everybody is supporting Yui with her ability to lead the country, and she decides to go pay Abel a visit, this time with all of her closest aides. That was a pretty decent turnaround in character there seeing that in a situation like this, Yui and Rena can't approach things in that mood.

So with that, the trial period for this show is over, and with the show's broadcast being suspended that the decision was already made for me in regards to its spot on my summer season watchlist. It was on the chopping block in what was becoming a crowded season, but the delay means that it won't take a spot on my summer watchlist, which gives me more time to evaluate and sort things out.

                    Episode 5

                    Sisters until the end.

After taking a long break, this show is back, and with improved animation to go along with it. Here is an article that explains some of the differences between the original broadcast and the new version.

So last time, Abel sent out a request for Yui to hand over Rena realizing just how much danger she will face if she refuses, and of course Yui says no to it. So Abel comes in to fight Yui and Rena, and their bonds lead them to unleash their new power to defeat Abel. This feels just like that situation in Fate/Illya 3rei!! with Illya and Miyu, except that here, saying no means putting the country at risk for war. The buildup wasn't all that interesting, but the fight at the end certainly was great.

Nice to see the series finally return. Also I love how the ending drives home Rena's age in comparison to Yui with Yui at varying stages of her life.

                        Episode 6

                        Nothing lasts forever.

Yui, Rena, Sara, and Tia are summoned to another country to hear the story about the Ruks ex Machina from another Regalia in Ryu as she has lived quite a sad life having stayed with her husband Lowe in the middle of a desert. She pretty much exhausted her Regalia powers in sealing those dangerous machines to the point where Lowe became immobile. That was some pretty interesting insight as to what it means being a Regalia. And now, Johann is on the attack with the four girls being sprung into action, and hopefully with all of the adjustments made that the fight will be nicely animated.

                          Episode 7

                          It all started here.

Last time, the Ruks ex Machina was revealed to be at the cause of all the chaos and destruction, and now having landed in the ruins of Rimgarde, the girls end up in the place where it all started following Kei there to meet up with Ingrid. Under the guise of technological advancements, this project was actually intended to revive that WMD. And then Johann attacks after the girls drew him away from the airship, the first battle with all three Regalias together. That was some intense action there, and together they have quite a lot of firepower. Anyway, now that the girls know who and what caused all this destruction that it will be interesting to see how everything fits in.

                            Episode 8

Will the real Kei please step forward?

Rena and Sara finally get to the bottom of everything, and as it turns out Johann is a mad scientist who is responsible for Rimgarde's destruction, as well as turning Kei into some soulless monstrosity, while Ingrid is the princess of Rimgarde and has a score to settle with him. So after the three resonate, Kei is finally back to her true self and everybody delivers divine retribution on Johann. That was a great moment there to see Ingrid and the real Kei finally back together after all of that suffering that Johann put them and her entire country through.

I was ready for that smug brat to have his smug face punched right out of him. He's supposedly beaten, but kept up the cocky act to the very end even as "the tables were turned on him" and we still got several episodes left so maybe not done with his crap yet either. I wonder what's coming next (maybe something to do with Rena's dual nature?)
