Germany was divided into East and West after WWII, where citizens of either treated the other side as enemies. In the midst of Cold War, however, the Earth was invaded by an alien life form landed on Kashgar, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, known as "Beta." Now, ten years after the first contact, East Germany, formally German Democratic Republic, has become the front line.

    Gotta be united, not divided.

That was pretty dark right off the bat. Total Eclipse started like that, but it only involved one of the main characters. This one involves all of the main characters, and they sure have personality issues as Theo is being so cold towards Katia, Iris is willing to sell our her comrades for the greater good, and then there's that epilogue where that lady is willing to do whatever it takes to unite a divided Germany seeing that it's going to be tough battling each other on top of the Betas. And one of the pilots is killed, all while Theo's has a bone to pick with the Stasi for killing his parents and taking Lise away from him. I certainly like what I have seen so far, and this story figures to be better than Total Eclipse given the seriousness of the situation.

After Total Eclipse I wasn't expecting much, so at least I wasn't disappointed this time, and I won't be sticking with it just because I want to believe there will be more to it. Ironic after I just put half a grand toward Muv-Luv. But I'm perfectly fine with sticking to the real thing (specifically Alternative, of course), and no amount of mediocre spin-offs will dampen that enthusiasm.

        Episode 2

        Searching for her family.

The person Katia is looking for is her father, and that psycho bitch introduced in the epilogue is Beatrix, who Iris knows from her school days. Iris did indeed kill her brother for the sake of the country. Stasi sure is a messed up unit just like in Cold War history, and even more so after seeing then taking Katia and Eberbach away from their families. But before they have to deal with Stasi, there's a BETA invasion, and for some reason Pham and Katia were asked to hold down a fort by themselves leaving them both badly injured. The brutality and emotional turmoil is really intense here, and I'm certainly liking it.

So with that, while this show is likely to make my watchlist for the season, I'm not quite ready to call it in just yet. I'm invested in the Muv Luv franchise, and this is shaping up to be better than Total Eclipse is.

Not people for a country, but a country for the people.

More flashbacks surface all going to show that Theo and Iris have their country in their minds. Last time, Katia and Pham went down and are left for dead in the fort, but with Kurt's heroic sacrifice, they are rescued while a bunch of BETAs go down with the fort. That was a really emotional moment there seeing that everybody has to go through a lot of grief in order to bring revolution. And then there's the end part where Theo's sister who he believed to be dead has joined the platoon. It will interesting to see what Lise's deal is.

            Episode 4

Stepsiblings reunited. What about the countries?

Theo and Lise have a touching reunion there seeing that the ribbon on her head is what kept her motivated to keep on living. That was pretty cute seeing her together with Katia. But of course, everybody remains on alert seeing that she could have been sent in by the Stasi as a spy seeing just how manipulative they are. Then comes a battle against the BETAs, this time in a joint operation with West Germany and the UN, and things could have ended disastrously seeing that the orders put them in harm's way, but they had the presence of mind to retreat against orders, all while a unit from the UN comes in to assist their escape. That's a nice way to reintroduce Lise, and it will be interesting to see what really is going on with her as something wicked is definitely at work for her to just show up like that.

The only questions about Lise: has she become a true believer or is she brainwashed? If she's brainwashed, is she a sleeper agent who'll surface with the right code words. And, of course, Theodor just up and tells her that the Captain gave up her family and killed her brother only because she had to. Blabbermouth big brother.
My Avatar: The lovely Mikuru Asahina from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Why do I stick with her in a world of constantly changing avatars? Because:
              1) Her friendly, playful attitude in that picture, (despite being forced unwillingly into cosplay), reflects my own friendly, playful personality;
              2) Mikuru-chan is an excellent combo of smoking hot and super sweet cuteness; and
              3) It makes it easiier for me to find my own posts in threads.

I think that the more likely scenario is that she was brainwashed seeing that Lise values her big brother more than anything else in the world. There's that, and the fact that she remembers nothing between the time she last saw Theodor and the time she woke up as a Stasi prisoner, and seeing how manipulative the Stasi are shredding any piece of info that could be used against them that Lise is who they need in order to make the squad vulnerable. Given that just about everybody in this show has some personal baggage that it's hard to see where things are going.

                  Episode 5

East or West, it doesn't matter.

In comes Kirke, and her attitude towards the East didn't sit too well with Anett. The West does a pretty crappy job in strategizing seeing that they failed to take into account how dangerous the laser-class BETAs are (and if you saw Total Eclipse, you know just how tricky they are to deal with). But it's a great thing that everybody on the 666th TSF Squad stepped in to win the battle. And then, Beatrix shows up again at the end torturing her prisoners to give them info, and then killing them anyway. Lots of agendas are going on here, but at the very least there is some cooperation between enemy countries seeing that their priority is to exterminate the BETAs.

Eastern boys and Western girls, a dead-end world... (apologies to Pet Shop Boys). It's story-telling at its most unsophisticed, but it gets me every time: arrogant tools insult our plucky, underdog heroes only to have their asses saved by said underdog heroes. Love it! By the way, does anyone recognize the prisoner that Ilsa, SS She-Wolf shot at the end? Was that someone we've seen before or just a generic sacrifice?

That was Marai. I wonder if she actually was able to withhold information, or she just thinks she did...

@ Asrialys - thanks for the info but for the life of me I can't remember her as a character. I hate to ask this but I don't really want to go back and rewatch previous eppies: can anyone remind me of something that would help me recognize her?

She was the secretary/love interest/something of the general (or whomever he was) of the base. He was killed in action because the Stasi didn't send backup like they said they would. She was the one who input the password "marai marai marai" into the general's computer to reveal a list of names.

Thanks again, Asrialys. It concerns me that despite providing me with specific details that should trigger my memory, I still can't remember her. Ugh to the aging process.
