    Episode 1

    Enjoyably stupid.

That's how I'd describe episode one of Shomin Sample.

Take a normal guy from a normal life. Throw him into a school full of the type of naïve rich girls that is reserved only for anime and other specialist interest literature, and then threaten his manhood if the truth that he's not a muscle fetishist comes out.

Introduce Reiko. A beautiful blonde girl in thigh-highs who is the popular girl in class.
Introduce Aika. Adorable energetic girl who has the combined common sense of two planks of wood, and is honest beyond fault.
Introduce Miyuki. Stern faced but cute maid, who has her eye on getting in to Kimito's trousers... with a meat cleaver if ever she learns he has a leg fetish not a muscle fetish.

It's a show that could get stale very quickly, but there's enough interest to keep me coming back for more than just a Sample.

That sounds about right. It could have been a lot worse than it turned out. They'll need to keep the absurdity level right where it is, otherwise this will get stale very, very quickly as you just said.

Normally, the Aika type could be fairly annoying, but in this case, they have her pitched at about the right level of cute cluelessness combined with abundant energy and optimism.

This could work. Though it wouldn't hurt to soften Miyuki at some point…though I highly doubt that's going to happen. That type of character tends to be a one-trick, one-note, one-dimensional model. You could replace her with an android.

        Re: Episode 1

I was thinking briefly about how we were getting a good look at that zettai ryouiki when Kimito was introduced to the girls. Funny how that gets to actually making sense within the show when Kimito's real (haha, muscles...) interests are later revealed.

And this is like a whole school full of Wakaba's. The level of general airheadedness is astounding enough to even feel like the show is trying to make a critical statement, but regardless of that, I'm very amused by it so far. Obviously it will have to mix things up a bit more to stay appealing, but I think it just might do so. The characters so far seem quite fun, and there's some we haven't even been introduced to yet.

Seems more like a developing nation, where the 'commoner' is placed on a pedestal and venerated Anyone who's traveled to a country visiting the locals in the outskirts (or even within the 'metropolitan' areas,) should know that kind of feeling. Seriously, the entire gag with Reiko returning his smartphone was hilarious...but it does make you wonder. The scene was pretty witty to an extent, as her overblown courtesy to return his phone lacks 'common sense', so much that the exaggeration almost feels pathetic. And then there's the serious gap between being downright ignorant versus prim and proper. The girls are knowledgeable in some things like trains and tickets, but seem to be five generations behind. Their surprise over the phone is evident that they're just not attuned to the outside world, despite being a position one would think they'd be involved in wider, if not worldly social interaction that establishes themselves among the elite echelon of society.

Their social etiquette might be fine for 'the time' they're living, and they're not actually being rude by any means considering that fact, but place them in a situation needing common sense, and they'll be unfortunately lost. So it'll be interesting to see what Kimito is forced to accomplish (other than acting like a homosexual that adores muscles) for these girls and how it'll change them.

That was pretty much exactly what I expected. I'd like to think of this as some sort of satire of otaku wish fulfillment, but... yeah, I don't know.

Learning the ways of the Average Joe.

And so it begins with Kimito being kidnapped to help fix a problem at an all-girls elite school where upon graduation, the are totally clueless about how to interact with commoners. Kimito sure has to put up with a lot seeing that these girls see everyday items with great fascination. The whole concept is pretty stupid, but in a funny way. I'll continue to watch this for now to see how things build from this.

This touches on the biggest question in this series so far: Was he gang-raped in the limo?

Introduce Reiko. A beautiful blonde girl in thigh-highs who is the popular girl in class.
Thigh highs, yes. But how can one forget to mention that bouncy bust?

Introduce Aika. Adorable energetic girl who has the combined common sense of two planks of wood, and is honest beyond fault.
That's just cruel! How dare you insult two planks of wood like that!

Introduce Miyuki. Stern faced but cute maid, who has her eye on getting in to Kimito's trousers... with a meat cleaver if ever she learns he has a leg fetish not a muscle fetish.
Personally, I go with the theory that Kimito was gang-banged on her orders, she videoed the whole thing, and is planning to watch it tonight while she gives her "toys" a workout.

It's a show that could get stale very quickly, but there's enough interest to keep me coming back for more than just a Sample.
This show is incredibly stupid. Now, there is good stupid and bad stupid, of course, but right now this show is hitting the "too stupid to suspend any sense of disbelief" zone for me. The fish out-of-water concept dealing with people who have no sense of how the modern world works has been tried in many media formats. When dealing with one person, Samurai Harem, or a small group, The Beverly Hillbillies, the concept can work, because of the relative isolation that a small group can attain.

                Problems:

-Here we have hundreds (thousands?) of girls raised as uber-oujosama aristocrats by their families...and don't recognize a smart phone.
-Oh, so they need a "commoner" to teach them...when everyone of them has a personal maid who is, duh, a commoner.
-None of these girls have older and/or younger brothers? Male relations of any kind other than paternal?

Seriously, this show's giving these girls this level of naivety and/or stupidity (Aika!) seems solely intended to inspire hentai doujinshi circles ("This is how female commoners greet male commoners. It's called a "blowjob".) And, considering the as-yet-to-be-introduced uber-loli in the OP & ED, this will result in VERY BAD THINGS.

Ironically, we had a nice screwball show last season in I Am, dealing with dense people, and the outstanding satirical comedy Shimoneta, dealing with the impact of naivety and ignorance. Sample is clearly not going to reach the heights of Shimoneta, but I wonder whether it can reach any height at all or if it will just be a flatline. There's some potential here: Miyuki is a great character, and Aika's stupidity has screwball potential. So, it's not quite flatlined yet for me. I'll keep watching to see where it goes, but I'm not too optimistic.

                2) Mikuru-chan is an excellent combo of smoking hot and super sweet cuteness; and

                  Re: Episode 1

Well, this was more stupid than I expected. How on earth did thigh-high fetish turn into muscle fetish? Are these girls living in a cave or something? How can they not know what a smartphone is especially when they come from super rich families? How on earth did traveling on a train become some sort of urban legend? What on earth do they teach these girls at school? This episode had so much stupidity that it was actually funny.

Aika is so dumb and will believe anyone if it results in her becoming popular. That blonde girl had some serious jiggle in her boobs. Lol how she wrote a letter, added a small gift, put it neatly in a box along with the phone, then put it in a small bag. She did all that just to hand over a freakin smartphone. God this is stupid.

I'm sticking around some more here. Mainly because Aika is surprisingly a cutie. The loli though, is super creepy. I don't think I would want to see her though.

Lol looks like in the next episode Aika might come across one of the pleb's hentai doujin and see that showing your panties is what commoners do.

I....don't think this show is trying to be something like Shimometa, and comparing the 2 probably isn't going to be a fair for either show.

I am might be a closer comparison though. They might not be trying to be the same show, but at least the comedy is closer between those 2.

I bet this show has some of the same type problems that the show dfrag did for me. I am quite fond of the dfrag manga, but the show was never able to get the timing or tone of the jokes right, even when it was going word for word from the source material. So, alot of times the show fell kind of flat.

I'm guessing that Shomin is going to have the same problems. It's either nail it, or bust.

                      Episode 2

So far I am liking Aika. Her character is coming off as cute instead of annoying. And she even looks cute.

Things are getting more and more stupid here. Aika believing that commoners have superpowers in high-school. That's what happens when all your mangas are about the same damn thing. Lol Kimito that evil little bastard.

Cup Ramen is another urban legend here. Lol how they treated that one little cup, dividing it among almost the entire school.

Lol because of engrish, Arisugawa started thinking about marriage after Kimito saw her naked. "Waiting" turns into "wedding" Lol. Arisugawa has the best thighs. Too bad he's a gay muscle fetishist here.

Kimito's reactions are a bit lacking though. If his reactions were a bit better, things would have been more enjoyable. That's what's making the comedy feel a little lacking in impact. It has almost everything an anime deriving its humour from stupidity needs. It's his reaction to all these girls and their lack of knowledge which is lacking a bit.

Hmmm. If I gave the impression that I was doing an apples to apples comparison of the shows, my bad, as that wasn't my intention. The only comparison I was making was that the commonalities of stupidity and naivety were handled far better than I forsee happening with this show.

D-Frag!? Well. I wouldn't really compare them either, though the humor experience might be the same. I was dubious of D-Frag!'s humor for the first few episodes, until something finally clicked for me. If I have a similar experience here, I'll be happy.

If ever there was an image for the caption contest, there's one in the OP for Shomin.

                          Last week I said:

Well, this week's episode only strengthens that argument.

Aika? I agree. Dumber than a doornail, but adorably cute. How dumb? She makes Shiragami Youko from I Am seem like Einstein's much smarter sister in comparison.

To sum things up while I go eat yummy dinner, I had a much better impression this episode than I did after the first.

Who knew that somewhere cup ramen is an urban legend?

Here is an episode that focuses on Reiko as she's a model student. Once again, the girls are amused by ordinary stuff like cup ramen and manga, all while it turns out that the girls athletic ability just doesn't measure up, and of course Kimito is totally overwhelmed by how out-of-the-loop the girls are. Well, that was funny, but at the same time this show is just too mind-boggling for its own good. Anyway, I'll give it at least through the full trial period when all of the main characters show up before making a decision on this show seeing that from what I have sampled, it's just another common harem in a not-so-common setting.

                              Episode 3

So Kimito's harem is almost complete with the latest additions being a loli who can't dress herself, but can surprisingly undress herself, and a samurai girl. What the hell is that loli though? The first half was so damn unfunny.

The second half was better. Karen is a samurai girl who trained herself and does not want to make a fool of herself which is why she went along with what those two girls said, her attacking the commoner and calling him a bug. She is so damn stupid just like everyone else. These girls think of commoners as some superhumans. She did everything herself, that freaky sword move cut everyone's clothes for some obligatory fanservice and she thought that the pleb cut her clothes. And then she makes Kimito her master to train under him.

The comedy is starting to fluctuate in quality. The amount of poorly executed comedy scenes is increasing. Needs more Aika though. Her cuteness is the only thing which isn't decreasing in quality.
