Announced on Friday by Kodansha, Naoko Takeuchi; Momoiro Clover Z to sing theme

Publisher Kodansha and creator Naoko Takeuchi announced on Friday that a new anime adaptation of Takeuchi's Sailor Moon manga is being produced. The new anime series is aimed for release next summer, and the idol group Momoiro Clover Z will perform a theme song.

Kodansha and Takeuchi made the announcement during a live event celebrating the 20th anniversary of the manga. Momoiro Clover Z sang the first Sailor Moon anime's theme song "Moonlight Densetsu" at the event via a live video feed from France, where they are guests of Japan Expo.

Update: More background information added. Although Kotono Mitsuishi and Tohru Furuya, the voices of Sailor Moon/Usagi Tsukino and Tuxedo Mask/Mamoru Chiba in the first Sailor Moon anime, were present at the live event, the event did not specify that they will reprise their roles in the new series.

Anime is not a right. It is a privilege, a consumer product, art, work for hire, a luxury, a hobby, entertainment.

Nice. A modern take on this franchise would be interesting, considering the evolution mahou shoujo (and anime in general) has gone through since the original aired.

Sailor Moon on BD hopefully i.d.c. I hope all the original seiyuus re-voice their characters.

Perhaps the movies will get BD releases first...

Excellent. I wonder with the more relaxed attitudes toward sexuality, Uranus and Neptune can really and trully be a couple this time.

If Junichi Sato directs this...I can die a happy man.

I'm very curious to see an updated take on the series, perhaps even more faithful to the manga. Really hoping the original cast returns, though most of them haven't been in anything in a while, I don't think...

The manga always felt incredibly rushed to me. I'd prefer a balance that embraces the urgency of the manga while taking the time to develop the characters like the previous anime did.
