During a discussion on the industry on a certain IRC channel, the topic of what would happen to the R1 industry if hardcore collectors stopped buying came up. For whatever reason, I was considered a hardcore collector.

I currently have five TRSI orders open--all of them are manga, except for my Demonbane pre-order. So far, this year, I have bought exactly two R1 DVDs: Sacred Blacksmith and Working!!/Wagnaria!!. I have the wall of anime DVDs, and yet I'm just not buying very many R1 DVDs. This wasn't the case a few years ago.

Why aren't I buying? I still import, but I used to rebuy anime that were licensed to support the industry without blinking. But now, why should I re-buy K-On! if the audio is gimped? Is there really any point to buying Sora no Woto on DVD after I watched it via CR and imported the BDs? Even if Sentai's upcoming Angel Beats release is flawless, I don't think I'd get much value out of it.

Another thing is due to the rise of streaming, which I partake of extensively. In short, I no longer feel guilty about not buying B/C titles. For example, last year I bought Nyan Koi--a show I didn't really like much--because I watched it via fansubs. But there are many anime I like to watch but don't desire to own, like Fairy Tail or Hourou Musuko. Without guilt motivating me, there's no reason to pay for them.

Then there is the issue of quality and my perceived lack of value that is affecting my blind buys. I was interested in trying out The Girl Who Leapt Through Space until I heard that it lacked certain extras. I'm afraid to pre-order Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls until I read a review. I've been burned before (Koihime not to mention BEI) so I think the risk of blind-buying is too great in today's market. But if I wait until a title is released, there's no guarantee I still care. Certainly, I'm happy that more anime is coming out on BD stateside, and yet past releases have had so many issues I'm hesitant to take the plunge.

Lastly, like many anime fans, there's not a lot being licensed I'm interested in. Looking forward, I can see myself buying Spice and Wolf II, Shakugan no Shana II, To Aru Majutsu no Index, & To Aru Majutsu no Railgun (at least the second collection). I may pick up Strike Witches II to watch if it's released on BD and Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls and Zetsubou if reviews are good. That's about it. Otherwise, it's basically streaming and importing, I guess.
